The Sea Sport 24 Provides Plenty of Fishing Opportunity While Being Easy to Handle

When the owner’s brother-in-law transitioned from a sport fishing focus to a yachting focus, he just couldn’t see the Sea Sport 24 of his brother-in-law’s go. “When he bought a brand new Helmsman Trawler, “ the owner says, “I just couldn’t let that be the reason we stopped hard core sport fishing activities.” So, the owner took this as an opportunity to make the boat his own and continue his passion for Washington sport fishing.

When asked what he has enjoyed most about the vessel, the owner talked about how easy the boat is to handle. In fact, it’s so easy to handle he can take it through the Ballard Locks solo without a problem. Then, once he emerges from the locks, “…there’s a myriad of opportunities for sport fishing action.”

And take advantage of those fishing opportunity the owner does!

Going Where the Action Is

The Sea Sport was both designed and built in Bellingham with the waters of the Puget Sound, San Juan Islands, and Southeast Alaskan waters in mind. It’s no wonder, then, that this boat is such a flawless fit for the Northwest. The current owner well knows this, and his use of the vessel well proves it.

The owner has, “…especially enjoyed fishing the Sea Sport in moderate weather for salmon and rockfish out of Neah Bay in the ocean along the Washington coast, and in the San Juan Islands for Dungeness crab. It works extremely well for over night spot shrimp fishing trips in Puget Sound and Hood Canal.” In fact, the scuttlebutt is that he commonly limits out on spot shrimp!

Though the boat’s main use and design is for fishing, it’s well set-up for simply enjoying time out on the water as well. “I have enjoyed pleasure cruises with my wife, kids and grandkids,” the owner says, “to Port Townsend, Anacortes and Puget Sound, and other destinations not easily reached by car.”

Stand-out Performance

We asked the owner what most impressed him about the boat’s performance, and he listed off reasons with ease. They include:

• Hull design, “…it’s the Sea Sport 24 hull design when I have encountered stormy seas that most impresses me. I have never doubted the seaworthiness of this vessel.”
• Reliability of the Garmin Electronics.
• The amazing features of the mechanical and electrical systems.
• Built in heater and window defrost systems, “…this boat is especially well suited for late fall and winter fishing for Dungeness crab and King salmon.”

With that, it’s no wonder the vessel allows for the type of on the water escapades that it does.

Notable and Unique Features

The owner has well maintained this boat, keeping it in tip-top condition. Not only that, he’s made improvements to enhance performance and comfort. These improvements include:

• Custom hand railings, “Because I’ve fished this boat in rough waters, for added safety extra high stainless-steel hand railings have been custom built by the same company who manufactures the railings for all Sea Sports. The railing surrounds the entire deck and has custom mounts built into it for two Scotty downriggers and a pot hauler.”
• A crab and shrimp water circulating tank system was added to the swim step, ensuring that catch stays fresh.
• Transom seat cushions and railing backrest pads for, “…evening and summer pleasure cruises on Puget Sound, Lake Union, and Lake Washington.”

With all that, there’s no doubt that this boat is ready for new owners to take it out on the water.

Passing the Helm

The owner is only letting go of this exceptional boat as he was recently offered, and then bought, the larger OceanSport 34 Roamer model. “Otherwise,” he says, “I would continue to enjoy the Sea Sport 24 Explorer.”
