Imagine transiting through the outflow of Canada’s mighty Frazer river, in high winds, with an intense sixty miles of fetch causing waves to crash on the beam – on the very first day of boat ownership.
That’s exactly what happened to the owners of this Nordzee Kotter 52 Long Range Trawler, but it was no problem for this sturdy-built boat. “It is hard to choose what is most impressive about this vessel,” the owners say, “but the stability that is designed into her would rank high on that list and it was proven on our first day.” Originally designed for the North Sea, it seems this boat can handle most any conditions.
Yet as capable as this vessel is, there is no compromise on charm and elegance. Along with seaworthiness, this boat is also perfectly suited for entertaining. In fact, the owners have hosted 15 for a meal made right in the galley!

Dutch Design and Build: Going Direct to the Source
“We came to this Nordzee Kotter in an unusual way,” say the owners, “a reason to own a second boat arose, and having already owned a Dutch built trawler, we were having a difficult time settling for something other than that type of boat building sensibility. It is this unique combination of capability and beauty that we find in the Dutch designs and builds.”
“This particular long-range trawler had caught our virtual eye and we headed to the Netherlands to check her out. We had our first look on the evening of arrival, survey and sea trial the following day, and a deal by late that evening made her ours. That is how compelling we found this ship to be.”
Of course, that was just the beginning of making the boat truly theirs, as they still needed to bring the boat stateside. “Shipping and importing a European boat to the US was new to us,” say the owners, “and was a learning, nail biting, but exciting experience. The vessel was splashed from her cargo hold into the Frazer River near Vancouver BC and we hopped aboard for her maiden voyage to her new Washington home.”
This Nordzee Kotter Proved Capable from Day One
Smooth sailing is not what they would encounter when their boat left the cargo ship, and the design was put to the test immediately.
“There was big outflow from the Frazer that very first day, plus a 25 knot, opposing wind, and sixty miles of fetch on our beam. Of course! But it was no worries as our new boat did not disappoint. Her hull form and significant ballast ate up these 5-6’ beam seas and gave us a safe ride home.
Being purpose built for the North Sea, the Salish would not get the best of her.”
Voyaging and Entertaining on the Puget Sound and Salish Sea
“Since then, we have travelled with her in the Salish and the Sound, always feeling secure in her sea going ability, and coddled by the confines of her interior with its high-quality design, material, and workmanship,” the owners recount, “She is not only a serious voyageur in the true sense of the words, but an entertainer as well. We have served breakfast for fifteen, prepared in her capable galley, in Rosario Harbor on her very spacious foredeck.”
Certainly, any guest or owner would feel at home on this boat with its gorgeous mahogany and acacia floors, along with the special touch of etched glass doors. Overall, the layout of the entire boat, and especially the berthing quarters, demonstrate purposefulness and craftsmanship. With that, this trawler is ready for new owners to make their own special boating memories with their own friends and family.
Meticulous Care with Upgrades and Improvements
Since owning the vessel, the owners have taken great pride in the maintenance of this boat. As they say, “At her audio gauge survey in Holland, the skilled surveyor noted upon completion of his investigation that we should get another hundred years of good service out of her hull with proper care. We took that to heart sparing no effort or expense!”
In addition, the owners have made significant upgrades and notable improvements. These include:
• New electronics and a re-done electrical system
• The hull below the waterline blasted to a high spec and recoated with, “…top notch materials by qualified professionals.”
• New hardwood flooring that, “…now inspires us when aboard her.”
There is no doubt this Nordzee trawler is totally ready for new owners to cruise in comfort and with peace of mind.
