A boat that continues to keep its owners marveling each and every time they see it is really something special – and is exactly what happens with this Lowland 471 Long Range Trawler.
When talking with the owners about the boat their affection, attention and respect for this trawler truly shines through. But this admiration isn’t unexpected given how exceptional the vessel is. Complete with seaworthy steel construction, smooth and attractive lines all paired with roomy and comfortable spaces, this vessel is a true stand-out.
From impromptu diving excursions and weekend getaways, to helping cope with the confines of the world in 2020, the owners of this vessel cannot sing it’s praises enough. The boat is perfectly suited, and totally ready, for travel throughout the Puget Sound and well beyond. You can’t help but imagine all the places you could go with a long-range trawler like this!

How did you originally come to own this trawler?
We did not set out to find this boat, she found us. Being new to saltwater, though experienced in freshwater, our mission was less grand at that time a decade ago when we first became this Trawler’s caretakers. It happened after a disappointing look at something more in our ‘league’ but in poorer condition than we had expected. The broker sensed this, and suggested we look at another boat.
I recollect quite well sucking in a breath as we approached her on that dock on that day. She was stunning to us and, perhaps not surprisingly, we still get that sense about her as we approach her from the dock or the dinghy to this day. We were smitten, and, after a walk through we accepted that even though we were punching above our weight in terms of what we had set out to acquire, we had to have her.
As if the exterior was not stunning enough, the interior is a dream of Dutch boat building sensibilities and commitment to craftsmanship. The boat had taken firm hold over both of us.
What have you most enjoyed about owning the vessel?
Buying this Lowland 471 Long Range Trawler turned out to be a great decision and helped us discover what we think is fundamental to boating: It is not just a ride to a destination; it is a joyful thing. Part of that joy is owning a vessel that inspires you every time you climb aboard, especially when you share that experience with friends and family.
Where have you traveled to on the boat?
While the previous owners made regular use of her long-range capabilities, we have mostly cruised Puget Sound and the Islands with her. There have been many lovely trips with just the two of us and many memorable gatherings aboard with family and friends. Mother’s Day cruises to Poulsbo or Rosario with three generations aboard became instant tradition and the matriarch, at 90, still gets aboard with us on occasion.
Most recently, this trawler has been an especially important part of our pandemic coping mechanism by taking us a dozen times this year from her berth in Seattle to our vacation home, where we get to look out on her anchored in front between trips. Sometimes we’ll even stop on the way and partake of an interesting Puget Sound dive site since we always cruise with our dive gear ready.
What most impresses you about the performance of this Lowland 471 Long Range Trawler?
Being a round bilged displacement boat, this trawler does have a motion to her. But, we have been impressed with what an easy motion that is and how well she handles a range of sea states.
In one of the early years of our ownership, we found the limits of weather forecasts and ended up in a gale on our return trip to Seattle because a storm decided to come ashore several hours early. While I was embarrassed for having put us in those conditions, this boat took exceptionally good care of us that day and we got a great introduction to her sea going pedigree.
Is there anything notable about the vessels maintenance while you owned it?
This Lowland 471 Long Range Trawler was well conceived and well cared for when she became ours, and we have done our best to continue that care. A steel boat is as good her coatings, so we have spared no expense or effort to maintain those coatings. During our tenure, her hull has been blasted to a high spec and recoated from white steel. We believe her hull is in great condition and protected for decades to come.
Why are you listing this trawler with Waterline Boats?
A transition of sorts is in our future and that is how we came to the capable folks at Waterline Boats. We are two boat owners currently, but the reason we have used to justify two boat ownership has passed, so it is time to get down to one boat. In addition, we think a three-stateroom vessel is in our future. Both of our current boats are two staterooms.
When we were introduced to Waterline Boats we were immediately struck by the professional nature of the people. Knowledgeable, engaged, enthusiastic – my kind of people.
With this boat, there is story left to be written, and I look forward to the journey with Waterline Boats. I trust that I am in good hands, and I expect they will introduce the right persons to the same joys that we have experienced in our custodianship of this great ship.
