Finding this Kadey Krogen: A Trawler to Feed the Live Aboard Craving
We had just finished a nearly year-long cruise of the Great Loop on a Ranger Tug 29. We had traveled nearly 6,000 miles on American and Canadian waters from along the East Coast, the Great Lakes, the Canadian Heritage Canals and the inland river system from Chicago to the Gulf of Mexico.
From that great experience, we became addicted to living on a boat. When we returned to Puget Sound, the search was started for a comfortable trawler that was easier to maintain, fuel efficient, and could take us throughout the Salish Sea and Glacier Bay National Park in Southeast Alaska and back.
When Laurie walked aboard the Kadey-Krogen 39 Pilothouse Trawler and took in the design, engineering and craftsmanship, she turned to me and gave me two thumbs up, the sign that this is the boat.
A Perfect Design for Cruising in Mind
I loved the lines, the visibility from the pilothouse and the flybridge and the engine room where I could stand around most of the single, John Deere engine.
Only 51 of these hulls were built between the late 1990’s and the mid-2000’s. The boat was built for the cruising couple in mind: walk around side decks with high rails, elevated pilothouse, one large master suite with plenty of storage, one head with a separate shower, and the galley/salon that followed the mantra of many cruisers: cocktails for 6, dinner for 4, and sleeps 2. For the occasional guest, a settee in the salon converted to a queen size bed and the pilothouse bench made into a double bed.
Nearly every time that I did a project on the boat I would be impressed with the wisdom of the design, how the engineering of the systems was well thought out and the impressive quality of the craftsmanship from the wood joinery to the electrical wiring.
This full displacement hull that weighed 35,000 pounds, easily and comfortably took sea conditions that other boats could not. Docking was easier than I had expected because of the large rudder and the powerful bow thruster.
Taking in the Views with a Cruising Lifestyle
We did the nearly 4,000 mile round trip of the Inside Passage from Seattle through British Columbia and Southeast Alaska to Glacier Bay National Park and back. The scenery was eye-popping. This is a classic trawler that travels at 7 to 8 knots in nearly any weather comfortably. The wildlife in Alaska was amazing with whales, bears, and eagles. We ran the boat from the pilothouse where it was dry and warm from the hydronic heating system, sipping a hot beverage, and listening to music while the course was adjusted using the autopilot controls.
Notable Improvements
Under the current ownership, we made the following notable improvements:
• The first modifications that made the boat more comfortable was enclosing the large cockpit with semi-rigid polycarbonate panels that slide and lift away. This created a comfortable space that was protected from the weather and provided great visibility.
• The second modification was adding an entertainment system of a flat screen TV that could hook to cable, use broadcast signals or be connected to a computer. The system includes a DVD and Sirius XM satellite radio.
• As parts and appliances in this 2004 boat wore out, these were replaced with new technology. These included the head, the refrigerator and adding AIS.
Peace of Mind Made Possible by the Trawler’s Amenities
The Kadey Krogen 39 is a beautifully built boat that we used as a hub to discover and explore. The Avon Rover dinghy is kept on the flybridge and the electric crane safely deploys and returns it from its cradle. The dinghy took us up coves and bays, we carried inflatable kayaks and folding bicycles on the flybridge to expand the ways to get closer to nature and communities.
Additionally, we appreciate what the following allowed us in terms of cruising range, comfort, and safety:
• Water tank: The 300 gallon water tank made cruising in the wilderness comfortable. We used the generator and washer and dryer to do laundry while cruising.
• Anchor system: The Ultra anchor and 300 feet of chain took the anxiety out of anchoring.
• Large fuel tank combined with fuel efficiency: We loved the range that 670 gallons of fuel creates. We traveled from Ketchikan to Seattle on one tank, saved money by not buying fuel in Canada, and had fuel to cruise around Puget Sound for two more months.
