Capable and Comfortable Cheoy Lee Pedrick 55 Sloop Presents a Valuable Opportunity
From a worldwide circumnavigation to extensive sailing throughout Pacific Northwest waters, this vessel has proved both capable and a joy to sail. With meticulous upkeep and major refits, she stands ready to take her next captains on new adventures in comfort and ease.
The current owners of this 1986 Cheoy Lee Pedrick 55 not only gave this vessel great love and attention for nineteen years, but also went to great lengths to complete a five-year thoughtful rebuild. As only the second owners of this vessel, they came to own her after finding a passion for chartering. She remains perfect for continued owner-operated charter applications, as a liveaboard, or worldwide cruising – or any combination of the three!
A Passion for Charters
“After running a few charters on a friend’s 42’ boat, I found the passion for charters and decided to find a boat of my own more suited for owner-operated charters,” says the current owner, “I found [this Pedrick 55] through a good friend/mentor of mine and after shipping her up the coast from San Diego set about a 5 year rebuild/refit.”
This vessel even has a MARAD exemption, which is rare for foreign built hulls. While most uninspected vessels are limited to 6 passengers, the exemption allows this Pedrick 55 to take up to 12 passengers at a time.
When new, the vessel had originally been delivered to San Francisco, where the first owners embarked on a five-year circumnavigation of the world. With the second, and current, owners this Pedrick 55 has sailed all over the Puget Sound, San Juan Islands, Gulf Islands, and up into the Princess Louisa Inlet in British Columbia.
Thoughtful and Thorough Rebuild
Throughout the vessel’s major rebuild, the owners focused on keeping everything as functional and simple as possible to keep the systems robust, usable, and long lasting. A full description of her re-build is extensive, but key upgrades include:
• Refinished interior; constructed of mahogany joinery, varnished teak and holly decks with tasteful white surfaces and headliner
• Updated upholstery
• A Leisure Furl boom, which is “…fantastic for any kind of sailing or cruising.”
• A ForeSpar Aluminum Mast
• Schaefer 2100 Jib Furling System
• SS Dyform Standing Rigging, still with low usage
• Rebuilt Navtec Hydraulic backstay and vang
• New sails
• Refurbished tanks
• New electrical systems
After the five-year (2005-2009) rebuild the owners report that the vessel is, “…a far better, stronger, and more well-equipped boat than when she was brand new.” Since the rebuild the owners have continued to do “countless little things over the years to make her better than the day she was built.”
New upgrades since the rebuild include:
• New running rigging in 2010 with a new jib sheet and main halyard as of 2018. Both the running rigging and sails are removed every winter. Per the most recent survey (2020) the sails are in “excellent” condition.
• Large electric primary winches and an electric winch on the mast for raising/lowering the main with ease.
• LifePO4 12V battery system all around with a 3000W Victron Inverter/Charger
• Victron solar controller for the 340W SunPower panels
• A new aft head which, “…works like a dream.” During installation all hoses were replaced, and the holding tank was serviced.
A Joy to Sail
This Pedrick 55 Sloop, “…really performs well at all points of sail in all conditions,” the owners say. She has a deep, ten-ton keel that, “…sails to weather like a freight train and tracks well, no matter the weather and wind angle.” As the vessel is a heavy boat with a stout, well-built rig, she sails best in the 12-20 knot wind range.
The owners attest that this vessel is, “…a joy to sail at all points of sail.” In addition to smooth sailing one of the things the owners have enjoyed most about the vessel is how comfortable she is. With three staterooms, two head compartments and eight berths, she is roomy and welcoming – not to mention well configured for charter applications.
