Finding Scenic Seclusion Aboard the Robust Camano Marine 36 Camano Trawler

If you had the chance to get away on a solo cruise, where would you go? With stunning scenes of snow-capped mountains and evergreen trees towering above remote shorelines common in the Pacific Northwest, this region would likely make anyone’s short list. Though the area makes for rugged exploring, cruising there needn’t be a challenge. With the right boat, a Pacific Northwest adventure is easy passage, even alone.

The owner of the Camano Marine 36 Camano Trawler listed with Waterline Boats well knows all this, having spent much time boating the Pacific Northwest. With most his trips done single handedly, ease of use and maintenance was of paramount importance. For this edition of “A Boat Owner’s Insights,” learn from the owner what makes this Camano Trawler a perfect fit for finding true Pacific Northwest boating peace – with or without a crew.

Making the switch to a Camano Trawler

“Listening to baseball sized, grapefruit sized, basketball sized chunks of ice scrape against your fiberglass hull is upsetting to say the least.” This is how the Camano owner describes his initial visit to Glacier Bay, Alaska in his previous boat. With that experience, it’s no surprise that the trip became the impetus to finding a sturdier vessel. “I wanted to return to Southeast Alaska and do more cruising,” the Camano owner says, “I felt I would feel a bit more comfortable with a more rugged hull.”

With robustness in mind, he chose his current Camano Marine 36 Camano Trawler. In addition to a well-built hull, he favored this Camano to purchase for the following reasons:

• Reasonable selling price.
• Displacement hull with a ¼ thick aluminum plate.
• Full keel with a protected propeller and rudder. The owner felt having a protecting skeg was important, as he said without this, “One decent sized piece of drift and you are dead in the water reaching for the mike on your VHF radio.”
• Minimal hull maintenance – no painting or waxing required. “One pressure wash per year in the spring is all it needs.”
• Simplicity of maintenance and operation.
• Large rudder and cut away forefoot that creates a fairly nimble boat in close quarters.
• Though a sturdy boat, it is still a light boat. “It’s light enough,” says the owner, “that if there is a little wind and current I can manhandle the boat on and off the dock [alone].”

This Camano’s user friendly, but strong, design was just what the current owner was seeking to fulfill his cruising goals.

“I cruise [by] myself”: Traveling solo made possible by this Camano’s undemanding operation

The boat’s simple operation, maintenance and, “ease of use,” are what the owner says he enjoys most about this boat. Given that he boats mostly alone and admits he hasn’t always been in the best physical condition, it’s clear why this is so important to him. As he says, “My health is not robust but the boat is…I have had 10 to 12 hour days underway and it’s very easy to pilot and maintain watch.”

While his initial plans never materialize to head back as far north as he once had, the owner has still ventured into the Puget Sound and well beyond. He’s taken numerous vacations in Desolation Sound, and has taken the Camano Trawler as far north as Sullivan Bay in the Broughton archipelago, “…all single handed.”

During his trips the owner has spent nights on the hook, with pleasant results. “With the pilothouse aft she rides easy on her anchor with little swing,” explains the owner, “I have been anchored in bays next to high windage fiberglass yachts with small craft winds blowing and watched them swing wildly back and forth working their rode and putting stress on their anchor set while the Camano Marine 36 Camano Trawler was swinging lightly on her rode in a gentle motion.”

Notable upgrades make this Camano Marine 36 Camano Trawler cruise ready

The Camano has been well maintained, and the owner has also taken special attention to make this vessel stand-out as cruise ready with the following additions:

• Laconner Maritime constructed a radar arch and flopper stoppers with paravanes to help reduce the rate and amount of roll. This addition improves the righting arm of the boat, unlike hydraulic fins and other types of stabilizers.
• LaConner Maritime also did a refit including the construction of an emergency rudder, and replaced the propeller shaft with new stainless propeller
• Additional propane tank capacity.
• Exterior handrails.
• A generator.
• A water maker.

Why list with Waterline Boats?

When asked why this owner would entrust his listing with Waterline Boats, it’s clear he knows they are the ones to turn to for Camano trawlers. He lists the history of the Camano design, from the first Camano’s being built in British Columbia in the 1980’s, to the start of the Camano 31. “Waterline carries Bracewell yachts which are descendants of the Camano line,” the owner says, then adds, “I also had a friend who sold their boat through Waterline who had a good experience with them.”
