Ballard Locks celebrates 100 years –

An impressive parade of historic ships and vessels passed through the Ballard Locks yesterday in celebration of the Hiram M Chittenden Ballard Locks’ 100th birthday.

The beautiful schooner Adventuress had the honor to lead more than 40 historic vessels of various types and sizes, including the Virginia Five, down the ship canal and on to Lake Union.

The Ballard Locks are an essential part of Seattle – connecting Puget Sound to Lake Union and Lake Washington. Both commercial and recreational boats have benefited daily since it first opened in July 1917.

Looking for a boat to take through the locks? Waterline Boats has an inventory of new boats, pre-owned boats, sail and power!

Duck Dodge Celebrates Seattle Summers, Boaters, and Ducks!

A true sign of summer in Seattle – Duck Dodge is a frenzy of a sailboat race.

While others rely on groundhogs to tell when winter mercifully ends, Seattle boaters know that summer is finally here when a sailboat apologizes to a duck. Every Tuesday Seattle sailers decorate their sailboats and dress in costumes according to a weekly theme. Racers head to Lake Union to compete for a coveted duck-shaped decal. The goal: bragging rights and a lot of fun.

Duck Dodge is as much a party as it is a race. It’s an annual Seattle tradition with more than four decades of history. The rules for the racers are simple: “Never make a duck change its course” and “No hitting each other”.

The Race Committee, all passionate volunteers, organize the event. They run 4 starts for “Fast Boats”, “Half-fast Boats”, “Slow Cruising Boats”, and “Dinghy (small) Boats”. The racers zigzag around marks on Lake Union vying for Gold, Silver, or Bronze Duck award decals. Those who win affix the trophy decals on their sailboat mast or boom for some serious sea cred. The race is a spectacle that’s a blast to both see and be a part of.

Following the race, boats gather and tie up alongside each other to enjoy the company, greet newcomers, and relax under summer evening sunshine.

More than anything else, Duck Dodge is a fun, welcoming, and close-knit community of local boat nuts. Every week they leave their stress at the docks and celebrate beautiful Seattle summer evenings with friends and fellow boaters.

Duck Dodge runs May through September, with a Tuesday always just around the corner… So, get in your boat, out on Lake Union and remember to respect the ducks!

Waterline Boats ~broker spotlight | Roger Drill

wlb-broker-spotlight-rd

For Roger Drill, the boat business is a life-long calling. His father got into the boating business in Duluth, Minnesota the year Roger was born. Small boats, row boats, and outboards were a daily part of his childhood as he grew up on Lake Superior. He bought his first boat at just 12 years old and by 14 he was hooked on racing sailboats. The passion for racing continued throughout his life.

wlb-2400-roger

“Racing’s a different world. It’s concentration. It’s decision making. A little bit of danger possibly.”

After many years working with his father, he continued to work and build his reputation as one of the premiere boat dealers of the Midwest. Roger then moved to Colorado to get involved in the mortgage banking business., and raced sailboats both in the lakes of Colorado and in races all over the country. After nine years in Colorado Roger knew that he needed to get back to big water. After spending some exploratory time in sailing around Washington he moved to Seattle.

Once he was in Washington Roger made the shift from selling to building boats – Nordic Tugs and later Pacific Trawlers. Later he moved into selling imported trawlers. Among his first customers for one of these boats were Scott and Lisa Helker who would themselves get involved in the boat sales and importing business as Waterline Boats, and now Roger works for them as a broker.

Today Roger sails an Ericson 29 and lives aboard a power cruiser. He’s planning trips to New Zealand, Thailand, and Croatia. For now, Roger’s happy with local destinations.

“I enjoy short sails into the islands around the area. Going to Poulsbo and crabbing. Just going out on Lake Union or Lake Washington and sailing. Being on board. Sometimes just sitting at the dock is good.”

A lifetime in the boat business in service, sales and construction make Roger tremendously knowledgeable. If you want to know the history of the boat business, the mechanics of a sound boat, or if you want to see a good sailboat race on a Tuesday evening, Roger’s the man to see. And if you’re looking to sell or buy a boat Roger can definitely help with that too.

Waterline Boats ~broker spotlight | Dave Carleson

WLB-Broker-Spotlight-DC

Born in Salem, Oregon, Dave Carleson has loved boats his whole life. Boating was a family thing, making family trips to the coast and renting rowboats on the Siletz River from a very young age. When Dave was older, he purchased a Gary 18 Sailboat, but his first boat was one he and his father built together when he was 4 years old.

DC

“We were on a farm near the Willamette River and as a child we would go to the river for picnics and drag boats on strings, pond boats we had built. So interest in the water just came with being born into this family.”

In the 70s Dave moved to Portland and began his 26-year -long teaching career. At the same time, he developed a fiberglass canoe company that, over time, built more than a thousand canoes. Later, his company built a sailboat, a Bahama 25, which sold commercially in the Bay area California and Seattle.

“I dreamed in those days of being able to not teach school anymore and have a water related business in Seattle.”

In the 80s Dave took a year off from both teaching and the canoe business. He lived aboard a Jason 35 sailboat. Once the year was up he found he didn’t want to go back and in 1989 he co-founded and owned Mahina Yachts on Bainbridge Island. For 25 years he connected buyers and sellers and loved what he did. He and few others were the first small group of Washington brokers to qualify as Certified Professional Yacht Brokers (CPYB).

In 2015 Dave was working on a co-broker deal with Scott and Lisa Helker of Waterline Boats. Dave appreciated their friendliness and professional ethics when it came to the people they worked with and for. Scott and Lisa were also impressed by Dave and offered him a job. Dave started working at Waterline Boats in May 2015.

Today, Dave lives on Bainbridge Island and owns a 38’ Sportfisher. He has cruised around a lot of Puget Sound and loves getting away and exploring.

“You get out to Neah Bay where the ocean meets the straights I would have to say that’s a big favorite of mine. Where big geographical areas converge. All of it is richer. The birds, the seaweed, the climate changes. It’s more wild.”

With so many years as a boater and a broker under his belt, Dave knows that with true boaters it’s about adventure. What boating have you done in the past? What boating adventures would you like to do? If you have an adventure in mind, Dave wants to help you make it happen.
